About the day...
On Saturday November the 23rd, CCMP held its annual Eleanor Calbes Vocal Scholarship Competition at Glenbrook Presbyterian Church. It was a wonderful afternoon of music and inspiring performances from 16 young singers from the Peel Region. We are excited to announce the winners of the competition for 2024! For the Junior Division - Sofia Zgonnik who sang "Don't Rain on my Parade", for the Intermediate Division - Mikayla Dimaapi who sang "She Used To Be Mine" and for the Senior Division - Mina-Rosa Ianonaco who sang "The Wizard and I".Congratulations to all who participated! Criteria:
1. Must be a non-professional vocalist between the ages of 9 and 19 and living in Peel Region.
2. Memorize and perform one song which demonstrates vocal ability from either classical or Musical Theatre repertoire.
3. Bring music printed double sided, 3-hole punched in a binder.
4. A professional pianist will accompany all participants. Teachers are not allowed to play for their students nor will participants be permitted to accompany themselves.
5. Participants will be grouped by age in Junior (9-12), Intermediate (13-16) or Senior (17-19) categories.
6. Performances will be adjudicated and a participant from each category will receive a cash award to assist in their vocal training.
Cash Awards are Junior $300, Intermediate $400 and Senior $500.

Eleanor Calbes (20 February 1940 – 19 April 2016) was a Filipina soprano who was awarded a scholarship with The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. was the first woman from the Philippines to perform on Broadway. She performed globally until retiring in September 2012.In 1985, Eleanor founded Mississauga’s first opera company, Mississauga City Centre Opera. From it’s origins as an opera company, Calbes Voice Studio (CVS) was founded as a family orientated workshop for musical theatre. Eleanor was also instrumental in starting the CVS Scholarship* in which young singers up to the age of 19 compete in three age categories for monetary awards to be used to further their studies. She was inducted into the Mississauga Music Walk of Fame in 2013.
